Malö 39 – sturdy Swedish built boat

“Tranquility” is our floating home. It is Malö 39, designed by the maritime architect Leif Ängermark in the mid 90’s. The Malö 39 is built by the Swedish shipyard  Malö Yachts AB. Our boat is a standard transom version with a bathing platform in the stern. It was built in 2002 and since we own it, multiple upgrades to the boat’s systems have been made.

Malö Yachts is one of the oldest, most experienced yacht builders in Scandinavia. The Malö 39 is a yacht of high quality and a true offshore sailing yacht. It is ideal for serious, long-distance cruising and full-time living aboard. The cockpit is deep, clear and well protected with a full cockpit enclosure.

Let’s go through the systems of Malo 39

Hull and deck of Malo 39

The hull, deck and superstructure are built in sandwich construction of fiberglass reinforced polyester. Below the waterline you will find an encapsulated long fin keel and skeg hung rudder. Long keel design enhances stability, while the moderate displacement allows for easy handling, even in challenging sea conditions. The teak deck not only adds a touch of elegance but also serves a practical purpose by offering excellent grip.

Rigging and sails

Malo 39 features a reliable and efficient sloop rig with double spreader Selden aluminum mast. Tranquility is equipped with a set of 4 sails: main with in-mast furling, jib, genoa and gennaker.

Ground tackle

Malö Yachts are known to have an unusual anchor set up with the anchor being pulled directly to the anchor locker, through the opening in a bow. It contributes to a clutter-free and clean deck. We have decided to upgrade the anchor to an oversized Volcan 33kg with 80 m of 10mm chain.

Malo 39 engine

Our Malö 39 has 55 hp Yanmar diesel engine with shaft drive. We can carry 280 liters of diesel fuel. Moreover, Tranquility is equipped with a very powerful 8hp bow thruster.

Electrical system

We have upgraded the electrical system with lithium batteries and solar panels, which we will describe in detail on our blog soon.

Water system

Malö 39 has 2 fresh water tanks containing 400 liters in total. It was also upgraded by us with a water filtration system. All the details will soon be described on our blog. Boat is also equipped with a 70 liters blackwater tank.

Interior of Malo 39

The boat’s mahogany handmade interior is as beautiful as the outside. Here you will find again many examples of the great craftsmanship that went into this yacht and the warm nautical atmosphere of the Malö. Large saloon with two sofas is the heart of the boat. To port is the practical galley. To starboard is the chart table and head with a spacious bathroom. In the forepeak is a master cabin with a private shower. In the aft section there is another double guest cabin. Malö 39 provides owners with a large amount of storage space under the deck as well as 2 massive lockers accessible from the cockpit.

Tender and outboard

We have a 2.6 m inflatable hard aluminum bottom dinghy with 9.9 hp 2 stroke Mercury engine.

Summary

Buying Malö 39 after 1.5 years of intense boat hunt was the best choice we could make. After the first season of sailing we still agree with that. It is a perfect, safe and comfortable platform for our adventures and full-time traveling. We still upgrade our “Tranquility” to suit our plans, keep her in shape, and make our voyage safe and comfortable. Later in our blog you will find more detailed technical information about the boat and the upgrades.
