Syracuse Sailing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We spent nearly a month in Syracuse in <strong>October 2023<\/strong>, as part of our sailing journey around Europe. And of course \u2014 we came back again in <strong>2024<\/strong>, this time heading west. Both times, we ended up staying longer than planned. Something about Sicily just makes you linger \u2014 and Syracuse pulled us in once again. There are places in the world that just fit you \u2014 and you fit them. For us, Syracuse is one of those rare places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything we\u2019re sharing in this post is based on our <strong>experiences <\/strong>from both of those visits. Its historic heart is the island of <strong>Ortigia<\/strong>, connected to the mainland by a few bridges. We do <strong>not<\/strong> recommend this spot.<br>There have been <strong>reports of theft<\/strong> here, and the concrete steps are harsh on dinghies. Add to that the wake from passing tour boats and an awkward climb ashore \u2014 and it quickly becomes clear that this isn\u2019t a great choice unless absolutely necessary. Honestly, it was one of our <strong>biggest challenges while sailing this region<\/strong>, even more frustrating than <a href=\"https:\/\/tranquilitymare.com\/en\/navigating-the-strait-of-messina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">navigating between the mythical Scylla and Charybdis<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Public trash containers are practically nonexistent<\/strong>, and those that do exist are often locked up. This isn\u2019t just poor planning \u2014 the <strong>waste management system has long been linked to the Sicilian mafia<\/strong>, particularly <em>Cosa Nostra<\/em>. For decades, they infiltrated the waste sector, taking over public contracts, using them for money laundering, and inflating disposal costs \u2014 often with devastating environmental consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even marinas often keep their bins locked, accessible only to people with a key. As we mentioned earlier, there have been occasional <strong>thefts of dinghies<\/strong> left unattended in different parts of the city, and even <strong>burglaries aboard docked yachts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve also heard stories (secondhand) of <strong>dinghies and gear stolen from boats at anchor<\/strong>, though we\u2019ve never experienced this ourselves or heard of it happening to anyone we know personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, we believe it\u2019s always better to play it safe, no matter where you are.
